LED package connection method and characteristics

1. Overall connection form

Generally, the LED1 ~ LEDN in the simple series connection form is connected to the end and tail, and the current flows at the time of LED is equal. For LEDs of the same specifications and batches, although the voltage on a single LED may have a small difference, because LED is an current device, it can ensure that their luminous intensity is consistent. Therefore, the simple series LED has the characteristics of simple circuits and convenient connection.

Disadvantages: Due to the use of series, when one of the LEDs occur, the entire LED lights will be extinguished, which will affect the reliability of use.


Second, the overall parallel form

Simple parallel form

The LED1 ~ LEDN in the simple parallel form is connected in parallel, and each LED is equal to each LED. It can be seen from the characteristics of LEDs that it belongs to a current device, and the slight changes in voltage added to the LED will cause major changes in current. In addition, due to the limitations of LED manufacturing technology, even the same batch of LEDs, there are differences in performance. Therefore, when LED1 ~ LEDN works, the current flowing through each LED is not equal. It can be seen that the uneven distribution of each LED current may cause the LED life with excessive current to decrease or even burn out.

Disadvantages: Although this connection method is simpler, but the reliability is not high, especially applications in the case where the number of LEDs is more likely to cause use faults.


3. Mixed formation form

The mixed form is proposed by integrating the respective advantages of series and parallel forms. The main forms are the following two.

String first and then mixed formation form

When the number of LED applications is large, simple series or parallel connection is unrealistic, because the former requires the driver to output a high voltage (N times of a single LED voltage VF), and the latter requires the drive to output a large current (a single LED current IF IF IF IF) N times). This brings difficulties to the design and manufacturing of the driver, and also involves structural problems and overall efficiency issues of the drive circuit. The number of LEDs in series and the working voltage of a single LED VF NVE determines the output voltage of the driving device; The value determines the output power of the driver. Therefore, the mixing method after mixing is mainly to ensure that there is a certain reliability (the LED fault in each string only affects the normal light of the string), and the matching of the drive circuit ), More reliability is improved than simple series forms. The entire circuit has the characteristics of relatively simple structure, convenient connection, and high efficiency. It is suitable for applications with a large number of LEDs.


Fourth, cross array form


The form of cross arrays is mainly to improve the reliability of LED work and reduce the failure rate. The main form of composition is: each string of 3 LEDs as a group, and the VA, VB, and VC output terminals are connected to the drive output of the drive. When the 3 LEDs of a string are normal, the 3 LEDs shine at the same time; once one or two LEDs are invalidated, it can ensure that at least one LED work is normal. In this way, it can greatly improve the reliability of each group of LED light, and it can improve the overall reliability of the entire LED glow.
